Skanska launches new asphalt reuse guidance

Infrastructure engineers at Skanska have updated an essential guide for the road surfacing and maintenance industry in the UK.

Andy Simms, materials engineering manager, and Max Townsend, senior waste and resources manager, led the update of the Managing Reclaimed Asphalt guidance to ensure it meets current legislation.

The guide helps users determine whether asphalt contains bitumen or hazardous tar, and describes safe methods for reuse that reduce waste, save carbon and cut costs.

It contains advice for classifying and reusing asphalt from roads, particularly where existing materials need to be removed, replaced or reused. It also includes recommendations for sampling and testing to ensure safety and compliance.

The guide is aimed at UK contractors, road surfacing and maintenance designers and clients. It has been produced by the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning & Transport and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management.
