During the 2025 World of Concrete trade show, the Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) shared that it teamed up with the American Concrete Institute to put together an updated set of post-tensioned structural concrete building code requirements — ACI-PTI 320-25, Building Code Requirements for Post-Tensioned Structural Concrete. The PTI also revealed its new certification program for multistrand and bar post-tensioning systems.
The ACI-PTI 320-25 Building Code Requirements for Post-Tensioned Structural Concrete will be released early this year.
“This is the first ever version of this new code, created and established jointly by PTI and ACI to cover the specifics of post-tensioned concrete structures,” said Tim Christle, executive vice president of PTI.
The code was updated to better provide information and solutions to increase consistency, safety, and durability, and hold a standard for construction best practices. This protocol is intended to help the industry keep a shared understanding of how designing and executing post-tensioned structural concrete should be.
In addition to the updated code, PTI also shared its new certification program that targets certifying and testing multistrand and bar post-tensioning systems (PTS). The PTI’s new program aligns with the PTI/ASBI M50.3 specification which is a commonly accepted standard. When certified through the program, post-tensioning systems are registered to the PTI website — this allows for the incorporation of the system into projects without going through a respective prequalification process.
Christle said, “This program directly enhances the quality and durability of post-tensioned concrete structures utilizing these systems.” In addition, he said that owners can “confidently use these systems on their structures, instead of maintaining their own individual prequalification processes.”
The new certification program and the soon-to-be-released post-tensioned structural concrete code are expected to improve post-tensioning standards and structural reliability, durability, and efficiency.
After its release, the ACI-PTI 320-25 Building Code Requirements for Post-Tensioned Concrete code will be available for purchase here. Information about the new certification program can be found here.
