Standardization, AI, and BIM with Jugal Makwana

I did an interview with Jugal Makwana at InfraBIM Open 2025 in Tampere, Finland. He had just delivered his keynote, “Role of Standards and Standardization in the Age of AI.” We discussed standardization, AI, and BIM. Jugal is a Senior Executive of Industry Transformation and Strategic/Open Ecosystem at Autodesk.

Standardization has significantly transformed in recent years, particularly within a rapidly evolving, data-driven environment. Traditionally, standards were perceived as an overhead—an additional layer of work that stakeholders felt did not provide immediate benefits. However, as technology has advanced and the importance of data has grown, the narrative surrounding standardization is shifting toward recognizing it as a competitive advantage.
