Temporary works specialist Altrad RMD Kwikform has provided a bespoke ground shoring and formwork structure for K Rouse Civil Engineering for the construction of the Fujifilm Borealis biotech manufacturing facility in Billingham.

The project involved a 10m-deep excavation in a confined industrial environment, which required a bracing system (‘GeoBrace’) with a modular hydraulic design for trench stability and to guarantee safety throughout the process.

Further complexities arose during the wall construction phase, where reliable formwork was essential to support the concrete pours while maintaining overall stability and safety (Image: Altrad RMDK)

Once the ground slab was cast, the team proceeded to the wall construction. The ‘Maxima’ panel shuttering system was used to support the concrete pours.

Superslim Soldiers were also used to improve flexibility and strength in wall construction.

Altrad RMD Kwikform said the combination of GeoBrace and Maxima systems ensured the structural safety of the excavation and optimised workflow, enabling the project team to save time and minimise risks.

The project was part of the £400m project to build Fujifilm Borealis, a three-storey, multi-platform biotech manufacturing site dedicated to producing vaccines and gene therapy products.

Altrad RMDK carried out drainage, earthworks, and foundation works onsite for K Rouse Civil Engineering.
